Overcoming Perceptions: Bad Experiences with Men as Catalysts for Change

by | Jul 28, 2024 | Reflections

In my journey of self-discovery and personal development, I’ve often found myself in environments dominated by women. This isn’t about sexism or any form of gender bias. In various courses, retreats, and shamanic practices, I’ve noticed that men are often in the minority. This trend is slowly changing, but it still appears that women are more drawn to the path of self-awareness and personal growth. Men, on the other hand, seem more attracted to ego-driven pursuits. This observation isn’t meant to judge but to highlight a pattern I’ve seen.

The Role of Negative Experiences

Many women I’ve met in these settings have had negative experiences with men—boyfriends, husbands, or other male figures who treated them poorly. These experiences often create deep-seated negative emotions towards men. In our society, we frequently see men portrayed as dominant or even oppressive figures, driven by physical strength and sexuality. While these behaviors are not excusable, maybe it’s essential to consider them from a different perspective.

Negative experiences are often the only way to trigger significant change and exit an unpleasant comfort zone. This is true even in situations where children are involved. For many, the discomfort and pain of negative experiences become the impetus for seeking a better life, not just for themselves but also for their children. The desire to provide a healthier, more positive environment for their kids can be a powerful motivator for women to embark on a journey of self-discovery?

Its a complex topic, perhaps these negative experiences with men (husband, boss, boyfriend, father, grandfather etc.) serve as catalysts for women’s personal growth? The adversity they face might push them to seek empowerment triggering changes which could not be started without saturation? Maybe these experiences that may be recognized as negative, might have been necessary for their awakening and transformation in this (or other) life. Maybe this torturer is someone who is just trying to show women the role she accepted (consciously or not) to play? The role she accepted by generation, which in reality is totally opposite to the real power she has inside and to who she really is?

It’s a challenging concept, however usually if something is annoying, then most likely universe is trying to tell us something. So maybe this man who is pissing you off so much, is actually someone who is helping you to open your eyes?

The Dynamics in Therapeutic and Spiritual Settings

As a man in these predominantly female environments, I sometimes feel like an outsider or even a symbol of the negative experiences these women have endured. This isn’t my intention, and I strive to be neutral and supportive. However, the judgment from those around me can be demotivating. It’s essential to recognize that men, too, are on their own journeys of self-improvement and awakening.

The therapeutic and spiritual settings I frequent are often spaces where deep emotional work takes place. Women, in these spaces, are often more open to exploring their vulnerabilities and traumas. Men, conditioned by societal norms to suppress their emotions, may find it harder to engage in this kind of work. This difference in approach can sometimes create a divide, making it seem as though men are less interested in personal growth.

The Importance of Compassion and Understanding

While it’s challenging to express gratitude or forgiveness towards someone who has caused pain, forgiving and understanding the role that men have played in their lives can help women heal and move forward. Men and women both have unique strengths and weaknesses, and the true power lies in embracing these differences and working together. Instead of fighting against each other, we should support one another in our respective journeys.

By opening our hearts and minds, considering that all is just perspective, we can move past the patterns and traumas that no longer serve us. Men and women are both needed in this world, and by helping each other grow, we can create a more balanced and harmonious life. It’s time to let go of outdated perceptions and embrace the natural strengths we each bring to the table.

The Role of Men in Personal Growth

Men have their own set of challenges and strengths. The traditional male roles of protector and provider come with their own pressures. Men are often expected to be strong, stoic, and self-reliant. These expectations can make it difficult for men to engage in the kind of emotional and spiritual work that is often more accessible to women.

However, this is changing. More men are beginning to explore their emotional landscapes and are seeking out opportunities for personal growth. This shift is essential for creating a more balanced and equitable society. Men need to be encouraged and supported in their journeys, just as women have been.

The Power of Collaboration

The real strength lies in collaboration. Men and women bring different perspectives and strengths to the table. By working together, we can create a more balanced and harmonious world. Women, with their natural intuition and nurturing abilities, can help men explore their emotional depths. Men, with their traditional strengths, can provide support and stability.

This collaboration is not about fixing each other but about supporting each other in our respective journeys. It’s about recognizing that we are all in this together and that our differences are what make us strong.

Moving Forward

In conclusion, the negative experiences we’ve had with others can be seen as opportunities for growth and transformation. By shifting our perspective and finding compassion, we can heal and move forward with greater understanding and balance. Men and women both have unique strengths and weaknesses, and the true power lies in embracing these differences and working together. Instead of fighting against each other, we should support one another in our respective journeys.

By opening our hearts and minds, we can move past the patterns and traumas that no longer serve us. Men and women are both needed in this world, and by helping each other grow, we can create a more balanced and harmonious life. It’s time to let go of outdated perceptions and embrace the natural strengths we each bring to the table.

I am fascinated with the unique qualities women possess—their intuition, ability to sustain and create, and their wisdom. Yes, as a men, I also appreciate the beauty of women. Let’s strive for a world where men and women support and uplift each other, recognizing that our differences are what make us strong. Together, we can create a more balanced and harmonious world.
